Here at Sugarslam we have taken a poll and determined our Top 20 High School Shows! This was a VERY close decision and our Top 10 is packed with phenomenal television shows! After much debate, here is our list! Enjoy!
20. Party of 5

When it ran: 1994 – 2000
Starring: Matthew Fox, Scott Wolf, Neve Campbell, Lacy Chabert and Jennifer Love Hewitt
The Plot: When Nick and Diana Salinger are killed in a terrible car crash, their five children are left -all alone. Oldest son, Charlie , steps in to raise his younger siblings. Bailey attempts to help keep it all together but falls into his own struggles with alcoholism. There is oldest daughter Julia, a young girl who keeps jumping from one bad relationship to another. Claudia , the youngest girl that plays the violin, who has to enter adolescence without any help of parents, and little baby Owen, who was only 6 months old when his parents died and thus will never know how it feels like to have a mother and a father. ‘Party’ also introduced us to Jennifer Love Hewitt as Bailey’s girlfriend, Sarah Reeves.

19. The Secret Life of the American Teenager

When it ran: 2008 – Present
Starring: Shailene Woodley, Ken Baumann, Molly Ringwald
The Plot: When 15 year-old Amy Jurgens becomes pregnant at Band camp, we watch as she decides not only how to process her pregnancy but we’re along for the ride of telling her family, friends and father of the baby. The ABCfamily original series debuted in July 2008 and has quickly established a large and faithful fan-base. I’m sure this series will prove to be a great one!

18. Fame

When it ran: 1982 – 1987
Starring: Debbie Allen, Albert Hague, Carol Mayo Jenkins
The Plot: The 1980 movie, the musical show follows students at the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. Episodes tackle serious topics, but smoothed over with singing and dancing.

17. Welcome Back, Kotter!

When it ran: 1975-1979
Starring: Gabriel Kaplan, Marcia Strassman, John Travolta
The Plot: Gabe Kotter, a wise-cracking teacher who returns to his high school alma mater -the fictional James Buchanan High in Brooklyn, New York to teach a group of remedial wiseguys known as the “Sweathogs.” The school’s principal dismissed them as worthless hoodlums and only expected Kotter to attempt to control them until they inevitably dropped out. Kotter learns how to keep the kids in line, while dealing with their antics!

16. 21 Jump Street

When it ran: 1987 – 1991
Starring: Johnny Depp, Holly Robinson, Peter DeLuise
The Plot: This wasn’t just your typical cop drama! 21 Jump Street followed Officer Tom Hanson and his fellow police officers, all who just happened to look young enough to go undercover in high schools. Each episode covered typical teenage problems and tempations, drugs abuse, alcoholism, AIDS and racism. The pilot was originally filmed without Johnny Depp but was reshot to include Depp before it aired. All episodes were followed immediately by public service announcements.

15. Happy Days

When it ran: 1974-1984
Starring: Ron Howard, Henry Winkler, Marion Ross, Anson Williams
The Plot: We follow the Cunningham family as Richie and Joanie grow-up during the 1950-1960s. Richie has as group of friends from school that he runs with, Potsie and Ralph and eventually high-school drop-out Arthur Fonzarelli, more affectionately known as “The Fonz”. Richie (Ron Howard) was eventually written-out of the show to enlist in the military. Happy Days spawned several successful spinoffs including Joanie Loves Chachi, Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy.

14. Growing Pains
When it ran: 1985-1992
Starring: Joanna Kearns, Alan Thicke, Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold and Jeremy Miller
The Plot: If you were a teenager during the mid-late Eighties you were a fan of Mike Seaver! The classic class-clown spent his days tormenting his perfect-grades sister, Carol, his little brother Ben and of course his parents Maggie & Jason. Everyone has to remember the episode where Mike writes all the answers on the bottome of his show??!! Growing Pains brought us many moments of laughter and of course many versions of their classic theme song!!

13. The OC

When it ran: 2003 -2007
Starring: Peter Gallagher, Kelly Rowan, Benjamin Mackenzie, Mischa Barton, Adam Brody, Rachel Bilson
The Plot: Ryan Atwood is a troubled teenage youth from the wrong side of the tracks in LA and when he gets the boot from his own house, he winds up living with one of the most wealthy family’s in Orange County (The OC). The show follows Ryan in his adjustment to his new way of life and his interaction with the other teens, Seth, Marissa, and Summer. With more twists and turns than expected for a night-time soap opera, The OC always left its fans wanting more, including when it ended in 2007, after only its 4th season.

12. Boy Meets World

When it ran: 1993 – 2000
Starring: Ben Savage, Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle
The Plot: Through the eyes of Cory Matthews, he watches his life change as he and his group of friends grow-up. Family issues are tackled with big brother Eric and little sister Morgan. We watch Cory fall in love with Topanga and take the ride of his life, everyday with best friend, Shawn. Guided by teachers and loving parents Boy meets World ranks at number 12 on our list!

11. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

When it ran: 1990 – 1996
Starring: Will Smith, James Avery, Alfonso Riberio
The Plot: A troubled teen heads from his life on the rough streets of Philadelphia to the sweet life with his Aunt & Uncle in their Bel-Air Mansion. We follow Will though his adjustments of fitting in with his new family, stuck-up cousins, a coy butler, all the while bringing the family together. Fresh Prince brought Will Smith into the world of Pop Culture, which, who isn’t thankful for that?
