Being the lucky girl that I am, I had a chance to chat with one of the hottest up and coming bands, Someone Like You. Based out of Columbus, Ohio, Someone Like You (SLY) is one of the most refreshing bands to come out in the last year. With their inventive melodic lines and “can’t get them out of your” head lyrics, this band IS the next big thing! Check out their interview below!!
Sugar Slam: How did you guys meet?
Someone Like You: We met over a period of time due to Garry’s persistence. He drew us all together one by one and we started practicing together and eventually created what is now Someone Like You.
SS: How did you come up with your band name?
SLY: When we were thinking of band names, we wanted to have something creative and witty, but still be able to relate to our fans. The phrase “Someone Like You” just naturally entered our minds as we tried to find the perfect name that showcases our down to earth personalities, fun music, and overall good attitudes.
SS: What kind of music inspires you guys?
SLY: We are all inspired by many different things, but naturally pop-punk comes to mind. Bands such as Green Day, Brand New, Forever the Sickest Kids, and Blink 182 are all favorites among the group and prove to be an influence to this day.
SS: Do you all write together? Or do individuals work on songs and bring them to the group?
SLY: Normally one of us will start with an idea, and then we’ll all chime in as a group. This gives the individual bringing the song to the table the chance to present the music while still allowing the band to write it as a group.
SS: If you had the opportunity to perform with any other artist or group, who would it be and why?
SLY: I think it’s safe to say that Michael Jackson would be incredible to perform with. He put on an amazing live show and had music that couldn’t stop you from singing along to.
SS: How would you guys describe your style of music?
SLY: Our style of music is a little different than the ordinary pop punk band. We incorporate piano into all of our songs and try to mix up the music as much as possible. We’ve got two lead singers, an amazing pianist, and a truly great rhythm section. Somebody once told us that we sound like the lovechild of T-Pain and New Found Glory.
SS: If you could each describe yourself with one word, what would it be?
SLY: Garry: Eccentric
Tim: Sex
Chris: Better
Stephen: Funky-Fresh
Zach: Goatee
SS: Do you have any personal motto’s?
SLY: I think the best motto that we have as a group is to take chances and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. If you put yourself out in the music industry and try your hardest, great things can happen if you work hard enough. Never be afraid to take a risk.
SS: I have to ask (My readers would kill me otherwise), any celebrity crushes?
SLY: Natalie Portman!!!
