Maria Shriver’s father, Sargent Shriver, has died at the age of 95. According to CNN, a family source confirmed Sgt. Shriver died after a several year battle with Alzheimer’s.

The brother-in-law to President John F. Kennedy, Shriver was the first director of the Peace Corps and at one point the head of the Special Olympics (founded by his wife, Eunice Kennedy, who died in 2009).

Shriver was a Maryland native, Yale Law graduate and submarine office in World War II, he married Eunice in 1953. The Shriver had 5 children, Robert Sargent Shriver III, Maria Shriver, Timothy Shriver, Mark Shriver and Anthony Shriver and 19 grandchildren.
