The all-time winningest Division 1 football coach, Joe Paterno, has died at the age of 85.
After news broke yesterday evening family and close friends had been called to the Nittany Lion hospital, news broke that Joe Paterno’s remaining time was limited. The Paterno family, his wife Suzanne of 50 years, his five children and 17 grandchildren, announced that Joe has lost his battle with lung cancer and surely dying of a broken heart, after the way his career ended and the scandal at Penn State.
“His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled,” his family said in a statement today. “He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.”
