Nick Jonas always gets emotional when he performs A Little Bit Longer, but during Saturday night’s performance at the Carousel of Hope Ball he had to fight back tears.
The song, which the 16-year-old member of the Jonas Brothers wrote, addresses his personal struggle with diabetes, a disease he was diagnosed with three years ago. “On the day that I got diagnosed, I heard about this event,” Jonas said of the ball, which benefits the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. “And I knew it was something that I wanted to be a part of. To be here tonight to perform is a dream come true for us and for me, it’s truly an honor.”
The diagnosis changed the family, said brother Kevin, 20.
“It was hard for all of us. When it first happened we were sitting in our house and we didn’t understand what diabetes was. So immediately we went to Wikipedia and searched it online to understand what diabetes meant. Once we understood that he was going to be OK, we were way more comforted and immediately wanted to go see him,” he said. “He’s doing really well with it and there’s times when we have to be there for each other and with Nick’s diabetes there are times that you can’t control it. And we just have to be there.”
The event brought out many celebrities, including Melanie Griffith, Quincy Jones, Clive Davis, Kenny (Babyface) Edmonds, Sidney Poitier, Virginia Madsen, Cookie and Magic Johnson, Joan Collins, Garcelle Beauvais Nilon, Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden.
Props to Nick and the Jonas Family for being so involved with fund raising for Juvenile Diabetes. Celebrity pull can influence to much the money that is donated to a cause.
