Indianapolis 500 Champion, Dan Wheldon, was killed today during a Indy Racing League event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The 33-year old died from injuries sustained after his #77 car went airborne during a multi-car crash. “IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries,” Randy Bernard said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute to in his honor.”
Wheldon was transported to the University Medical center, where his wife, 2 small children, and siblings were by his side. Dan’s parents, according to ESPN, are at home in England.
