Abby Sunderland is presumably lost at sea. The 16 year old Thousand Oaks teenager attempted to become the youngest person to sail around the world after setting sail from Marina Del Ray on January 23, 2010. The teenager reportedly employed emergency beacon locating devices on Thursday, June 10, 2010 after encountering a storm in the Southern Indian Ocean.
Abby’s father, Laurence Sunderland, and many other family member, friends, and fans are hoping for Abby’s safe return to Thousand Oaks. Laurence stated in a recent interview following a phone call from Abby: “Everything seemed to be under control…but then our call dropped and an hour later the Coast Guard called.” Abby’s brother, Zac maintains Laurence’s sentiment: “Everyone’s praying. It’s kind of a waiting game at this point. The main hope is to get a plane out there.”
Rescue attempts are underway. The ship nearest to Abby’s emergency signal location is approximately 400 miles away. Officials from the Reunion Islands and Australia are leading the rescue mission. Officials believe that the storm drew waves measuring 50 to 60 feet high at the time Abby’s emergency signal was activated.
Check back as details emerge.
